Understanding Criminals

I recently read an article that touched me. It was on understanding murderers, rapist, and child molesters. In this article a doctor explains that a friend of his was trying to get him to understand these people who commit these crimes. Almost as if understanding them would justify why they did what they did, and when the doctor stated he would never understand or sympathize his friend called him smug.

The doctor spoke of a case that involved a 4 month old baby who was violated by her uncle that he had to examine because the pediatrician could not do it.
This is what he says... "It is quite a thing to see the perineum of a four month old after it has been ripped apart by the penis of one of the people my friend understands so well. Feces run out of the vagina. It leaves a mark on the soul. But worse than that is the cry. The child did not scream anymore. I think it used up all its scream for its entire life during the deed. All that was left was a quiet constant moan. It is the ghostly moan of someone who has learned in her four month existence that there is no one who will come to her aid. There is no one to understand her. It will never leave me."

He also speaks of examining women in the ER who have been raped. This is what he says.... "The woman raped is difficult to examine. Somehow you feel you are violating her again. You feel you are making the whole ordeal worse. They don’t resist. They are already broken. Anyway, rape in our country is so commonplace, it may be the one area where I understand that my friend may have sympathy with the perpetrator, but, sorry, I cannot. For me to examine those women tears me apart. It leaves me with a feeling that my own soul has been violated. That I am forced to do something because someone else destroyed a life."

After reading this, I try, but do not understand how anyone could even want to understand the people who commit these crimes. They are not people, they are not human, and they cannot be fixed, so why try? Understanding them will not help and if you think it will, please, enlighten me. How could you possible help someone who would get pleasure out of these things, out of taking someone’s life be it physically or emotionally? Do they even realize the domino effect of damage they do when they commit these crimes or are they so selfish it’s all about their needs in that moment?

In my last blog I spoke of humanity and love. I hope that the people of the world understand this is not of human nature. Or is it? When I read these things or watch the news, I want to hurt the people who do this, I want them dead. Does that make me like them? I think it doesn't, because even if i was given the opportunity to hurt them, I probably wouldn't. That my friend is what makes us human. Compassion. I suppose in a sense it also makes us weak to the evil that surrounds us day to day.

Perhaps, if we think about this, it will help us change as well. Maybe, just maybe, it might make us consider the things we do more carefully before we actually do them. Even something as simple as text messaging while driving can have a huge effect on many lives if you accidentally miss that little child crossing the street because you’re answering your friend’s text. Is it really so important it can’t wait until you’re at a red light?

My challenge to all of you today it a simple one. Think. Simply think about the things you do and how the outcome might affect others and not only yourselves. Can you do it? Are you up to  it?
